Firm History
Flexible Plan Investments is a leader in the active investment management industry. Since 1981, Flexible Plan’s focus has been on preserving and growing capital through a robust active investment approach combined with risk management. Headquartered in Michigan, FPI offers a wide array of strategies and services that help financial advisors build their business and retain clients. More importantly, FPI helps hundreds of clients achieve their long-term financial goals.

The firm employs multiple quantitative, technical analysis methodologies in the design and implementation of its over 100 investment strategies within mutual fund, variable annuity, variable universal life, and ETF accounts, as well as within the four Direxion Evolution Managed mutual funds, which are sub-advised by the firm. Flexible Plan’s hallmark is strategic diversification, which is further emphasized in the August 2003 Financial Planning magazine article “Rethink Risk,” by Jerry Wagner, Flexible Plan’s

Through Flexible Plan’s proprietary software, trading technologies, and knowledgeable team of research analysts and software developers, FPI can offer strategic diversification. Strategic diversification portfolios created from multiple strategies using different asset classes with tactical and strategic active management methodologies which, when in combination, result in lower portfolio drawdown and a smoother equity curve and improved returns. Flexible Plan’s relationship with Trust Company of America over the years has resulted in a trading and accounting platform that gives FPI the flexibility needed to offer strategic diversification within a single client account at a low account minimum.

In 2007, FPI developed a client retention tool known as OnTarget Investing, which helps set investor expectations so that investments can then be managed and monitored to those expectations. Each quarter clients receive a report that shows their progress towards their investment goals using graphic updates that measure their portfolio’s volatility, max drawdown, and asset class diversification. At the heart of the OnTarget Investing reporting process is the quarterly OnTarget Monitor, which takes the historical research performance of each client’s portfolio of strategies, and, using the power of Monte Carlo analysis, projects probability-based outcomes. Not only is this useful in setting and maintaining client expectations, but Flexible Plan’s portfolio managers use it internally to continually monitor the success of each underlying strategy.

Flexible Plan employs a dedicated staff of over 50 to service representatives and their clients. Because FPI markets services solely to independent registered representatives and RIAs (over 600 solicitation agreements in force across the country), Flexible Plan’s sales support is unmatched in the third-party active management industry: with a dozen external regional sales representatives supported by an internal sales team; one of the largest client support departments; and a compliance-focused team with over 80 years of combined legal experience.

I am moving into retirement and would like to consider use of Flexible Plan Investments for personal side. My company currently uses your company to manage part of the corporate retirement plan.

How do I move to personal fund management? Do I use the same contact person (outside firm) for move to personal side? Can I have more Flexible Plan contact, instead of the outside firm?

I will need to move funds around January 1, 2013.

  2. Dean,

One of the 401(k) benefits of working with Flexible Plan is that all plan participants being managed by Flexible Plan can have outside funds and IRA rollovers from the plan managed at the same low advisory fee rate utilized by your retirement plan. If you have such dollars that need management, contact your financial advisor on your company’s retirement plan. Your financial advisor will be able to provide the available options regarding your personal account, and assist you with the paperwork if you wish to roll your retirement plan into an IRA.

Your Financial Advisor will then work with our New Accounts Department to get the account(s) under management. Once we are managing the new account(s), you may contact our Client Services Department directly any time you need assistance or have questions regarding your account(s) at 800-347-3539 option 1 or by email at clientservices@flexibleplan.com. There would be no change in the reduced fee you are currently paying.

Also, you have the option of utilizing our Family Plan, which allows you and your immediate family outside of the retirement plan to take advantage of the same discounted rate. This is an added benefit not only to you as a Plan Participant, but also extends to your immediate family. If you’re interested in this extra benefit, please include this in your overall discussion with your financial advisor.

Thank you very much for the comment.
